What Is This Calculator?

Profit per unit is the most fundamental unit economics metric. It shows how much money you make on each individual product or service sold after accounting for all direct costs. Understanding unit economics is essential for pricing, scaling decisions, and investor conversations.

How to Calculate

Subtract the total cost per unit (materials, labor, shipping, packaging) from the selling price. Multiply by units sold to see total profit. The per-unit margin is profit per unit divided by selling price, expressed as a percentage.

Examples

A candle costs $8 to make and sells for $28. Profit per unit = $20. Margin = 71.4%. Selling 200 candles generates $4,000 in profit. If fixed costs are $2,000/month, you need to sell 100 candles just to break even.

Recommended Tools

Shopify and WooCommerce can track per-unit profitability automatically when you enter cost of goods alongside product pricing.
